NOSE (RHINOLOGY)
Rhinology is a specialized field within otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat medicine) that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the nose and sinuses. It encompasses a wide range of conditions that can affect nasal function, breathing, and overall nasal health. Rhinologists, who are highly trained in this area, utilize various diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities to address these issues and improve patients’ quality of life.
Common conditions addressed in rhinology include chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, nasal obstruction, smell disorders, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Chronic sinusitis involves persistent inflammation of the sinus cavities and is often associated with symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, and reduced sense of smell. Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that can obstruct the nasal passages and sinuses, leading to symptoms like nasal congestion, runny nose, and decreased sense of smell.
Treatment in rhinology may involve a combination of medical and surgical approaches depending on the specific condition and its severity. Medical treatments may include nasal irrigation, corticosteroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, antibiotics, and allergy management. Surgical interventions such as endoscopic sinus surgery, septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and polyp removal may be recommended for cases that do not respond adequately to conservative measures or for certain structural abnormalities causing nasal obstruction or sinus problems. Rhinologists work closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to their individual needs and goals, aiming to improve nasal function, alleviate symptoms, and optimize overall nasal health.
